CLIMATE CHANGE destroys lives

Bishops' Appeal – Helping Make A Difference
The Bishops' Appeal is the Church of Ireland’s World Aid and Development Fund to help projects and disasters. The Bishops Appeal envelope can be returned on the plate at Services. Christians urged to pray in run up to UN climate summit. The central issue is how our climate is affected by our use, and replacement, of peaking fossil fuels (oil, gas & coal) and the consequent emission of carbon dioxide. But unless carefully managed globally this reduction will affect food production and poorer economies' future ability to develop better infrastructure, employment, education, health and protect nature; while climate change is already destroying infrastructure, roads, farms, factories and fisheries. With current farming and processing techniques, an increasing world population will require increased use of energy while decreased fossil fuel use is needed for the sake of our future climate.

Ultimately, it comes down to us, the wealthy nations, not wanting to bear the cost of all the carbon dioxide waste we have dumped into the atmosphere without the poor and hungry also paying out. President Obama noted “No single issue is as fundamental to our future as energy". We must do more with less fossil fuel while still creating enough energy from a myriad of sources to employ and feed all the 6.8 billion people alive today! That is the challenge for the 21st century!
